Vitamix Ascent vs Explorian: Which Vitamix Should You Buy in Australia?

Vitamix Ascent vs Explorian comes down to four things: controls, containers, motor and warranty. The Explorian E310 is the entry point, with ten variable speeds, Pulse, a 2 HP motor and a 5-year full warranty. The Ascent Series (A2300i, A2500i and A3500i) steps up to a 2.3 HP motor, a 2.0-litre low-profile container, SELF-DETECT containers, a built-in timer and a 10-year warranty, with programs on the A2500i and A3500i.

We're a family business with over 30 years in blending, and these are the four household Vitamix blenders we sell. Every spec below comes from our own product pages, so you can check it for yourself.

Looking for the E320? We don't list it, although you'll see it named beside the E310 on our classic container pages. You'll find every current model, plus containers and spare parts, in our Vitamix range.

The four differences that matter

1. Controls: manual or programs

The E310 and A2300i are manual blenders. You choose the speed, use Pulse for chunkier textures and switch off when the blend looks right. The E310 has ten variable speeds, and its Pulse lets you layer coarse chops over smooth purees for chunky salsas or thick vegetable soups. The A2300i adds a digital timer that shows how long your blend has been running, which helps you avoid over- or under-processing.

The A2500i adds three programs for Smoothies, Hot Soups and Frozen Desserts. Each one processes the recipe and stops the blender when it's done, so you can walk away. The A3500i has five programs (adding Dips & Spreads and Self-Cleaning), touchscreen controls that wipe clean, and a programmable timer: set the length of your own blend and it turns the machine off automatically.

2. Containers: the difference to check first

Ascent blenders use SELF-DETECT containers. The motor base recognises the container size, and on the A2500i and A3500i the program settings adjust to suit. Our Ascent containers can be used only with Ascent Series blenders, and our classic containers are marked as not compatible with the Ascent Series. In short, containers don't swap between the two families.

The E310 takes the classic containers, the same family our container pages list for the E320, the Total Nutrition Centre 5000 and 5200, Aspire and Professional Series 300, 500 and 750. If you already own classic containers, the E310 lets you keep using them (check the compatibility note on each container page).

Our Ascent container pages also describe an interlock lid, which they call a new safety feature: lift the lid mid-blend and the blade stops. The same pages say the container and lid are both dishwasher-safe. Cleaning works the same way on both families: a drop of dish soap and warm water, then a short blend. The E310 page says 30 to 60 seconds, and the A3500i has a Self-Cleaning program that does it for you.

3. Motor and batch size

The Ascent models are listed at 2.3 HP and 1200-1400 W, against 2 HP for the E310. The container in the box makes a practical difference too. Every Ascent comes with a low-profile 2.0-litre container, a low-profile tamper and the Simply Blending cookbook. Our separate Ascent 2L Low Profile Container page says that size is designed for six to twelve servings in a single batch. The E310 page describes its 1.4-litre container as ideal for medium batches for family meals.

Check your bench space as well. The Ascent pages list dimensions of 11 x 8 x 17 inches (about 28 x 20 x 43 cm), and the E310 page lists 28 x 20 x 46 cm. Measure the gap under your overhead cupboards before you choose.

4. Warranty

This is the clearest gap. The E310 has a 5-year full warranty and every Ascent model has 10 years. Both cover all parts, performance, labour and two-way shipping at no cost to you. Both warranties are for household use only and are void if the blender is used commercially.

Which containers fit which Vitamix?

Going by the compatibility notes on our container pages, here's what fits.

One more tip: if you plan to grind grains into flour, keep a separate dry container. Our Ascent 2L container page notes that hard grains can etch the inside of a container over time.

Which Vitamix should you buy?

So which is the best Vitamix blender in Australia? It depends on how you blend.

Choose the Explorian E310 if...

You want a Vitamix with simple controls and you mostly blend medium batches. Our E310 page calls it "your entry into true high-performance blending". It's also the pick if you already own classic containers, or you'd like the classic 0.9L container for smaller recipes or the Personal Cup Adaptor for single serves.

Choose the Ascent A2300i if...

You like manual control but want the 10-year warranty, the 2.0-litre low-profile container, a digital timer and the SELF-DETECT container range. Weighing up the Vitamix A2300i vs E310? The A2300i doubles the warranty and comes with the larger container, while keeping the same simple manual style.

Choose the Ascent A2500i if...

You make smoothies, hot soups or frozen desserts often and like the idea of pressing a program and walking away. The blender stops itself when the program is finished, and you still have variable speed and Pulse for everything else.

Choose the Ascent A3500i if...

You want the full set: five programs including Dips & Spreads and Self-Cleaning, a touchscreen that wipes clean, and a programmable timer for your own recipes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Vitamix Ascent worth it over the Explorian?

If the longer warranty and newer container system matter to you, yes: a 10-year warranty against 5 years, a 2.3 HP motor against 2 HP, a timer on every model and SELF-DETECT containers. If you want the simplest controls or already own classic containers, the E310 is the sensible choice.

What is the difference between the Vitamix A2300i and E310?

Both are manual blenders with variable speed and Pulse. The A2300i adds a digital timer, a 2.3 HP motor (the E310 is 2 HP), a 2.0-litre low-profile container in the box (the E310 page describes a 1.4-litre container), SELF-DETECT containers and a 10-year warranty instead of 5 years.

Can I use my older Vitamix containers on an Ascent?

No. Our classic containers are marked as not compatible with the Ascent Series, and our Ascent containers fit Ascent Series blenders only. The classic containers do fit the E310.

What happened to the Vitamix 5200?

The Total Nutrition Centre 5200 was discontinued in Australia in 2019, and our 5200 page recommends the Ascent A2300i or the E310 instead. If you still use a 5200, our classic 0.9L, 1.4L and 2L wet containers list the TNC 5200 as compatible.

Do these Vitamix blenders come with an Australian plug?

Yes. The Ascent pages list 220-240 V with an Australian plug, and the E310 page lists 240 V with an Australian plug. All four list Vitamix of Cleveland, Ohio, USA as the manufacturer.

Can I use a household Vitamix in my cafe?

Not if you want the warranty. On all four, the warranty is for household use only and is void if the blender is used commercially. For a business, see our Vitamix commercial blenders and our guide to commercial vs regular blenders.
